How to write a mid-60’s Beach Boys song
How to write a late 60’s Beach Boys song ala Bruce Johnston.
This song started as a challenge by my friend Tim, to write a song for his daughter who had just beaten Leukemia. She’s a big Beach Boys fan and an awesome person. I knew it needed to be sweet and joyful, so I turned to the late 60’s Beach Boys albums like Sunflower for inspiration. Bruce wrote songs like “Disney Girls” “Tears In The Morning” and “Deirdre” which are pure honey gold.
I wrote this one on piano first, choosing lots of Major 7th chords, 5’s over 6’s, and diminished chords and changing chords almost every beat. This type of song can pull out all the stops and be as lyrical and “Disney” as you want to go. Key changes were also a must.
As far as vocals go…I didn’t double the lead vocal this time around. Listening through that Sunflower record, there are quite a few song where the lead was just a singular vocal. I think it gives it a more intimate sound. The approach with harmonies (which there are a lot of) was to use them in an orchestral way, rather than doubling up on the lead vocals phrasing. Lots of oohs and ahhs and parts that move around the lead vocal and fill in pockets. The signature BB “bom bom bom” thing worked as a trombone part.
The rhythm section was pretty straight forward, everything just sort of plodding along, creating a nice bed for the orchestral and vocal parts to ride on top of…kinda like a horse.

Five stars! Excellent recording job, Chris! What you have done is a kind of "reverse recording" from the way most people do it today. Instead of creating mountains of tracks and layer upon layer of plug-ins and unnecessary digital BS, you have done a great job stripping things down to the bare essentials. This is exactly how the Beach Boys did it in 1962. We need musicians to start getting back to this kind of Totally Basic Recording! The MUSIC comes first, not the technology! . You just need some basic instruments gathered together in a small recording space, some guys and/or girls (or one guy like you) playing them really well, and combine that with excellent harmonized vocals. Some very simple EQ, compression, reverb, etc. and that's all you need to make fantastic records. Just ask the Beatles, and Elvis, and thousands of the greatest musicians of that "primitive" era of tape recording, who did it exactly the same way.
